American soprano Renee Fleming is in Beijing preparing for a concert with the China Philharmonic Orchestra on Monday night.
She has expressed optimism and excitement about her upcoming concert. "The thing I love the most is the audience, because there's clearly such an appreciation for western classical music, " said Fleming. "You know I think my first shock was in Guangzhou when I was there before, and it was all young people, only young people, and many, many women. And so we were not used to that. In the US and in Europe, it's something that's quiet over time. People turn to come back to it later in life. So it's very exciting to be treated like a rock star."
She will sing some well-known Shubert songs at her Beijing concert. Her repertoire also comprises some classical Italian Opera Arias.
In 2014, Fleming became the first opera singer to perform the anthem at the Super Bowl.
Her Beijing concert marks the end of the more than 3-week-long Beijing Music Festival.
